The Hotel is located in the center of an old hacienda from the 16th century, Hacienda San Martín, which has witnessed some of the most important events in our history thanks to its strategic location between Toluca and Mexico City.
Founded in 1566, the Hacienda was initially dedicated to small cattle, but later it was consecrated as a wheat hacienda. With its own mill, the San Martín Hacienda became an important supplier of grain for the valleys of Mexico and Toluca.
Among its first owners are great figures, such as Diego Carrillo de Mendoza y Pimentel, Marquis of Gelves and Count of Priego, who served as Viceroy of New Spain from 1621 to 1624.
In 1810, during the War of Independence, the ground of the Hacienda San Martín vibrated with the roar of royalist cannons. Very close to the hacienda, the legendary Battle of Monte de las Cruces took place, where the insurgents achieved one of their greatest victories. Later, the San Martín Hacienda was devastated by groups of revolutionaries commanded by Emiliano Zapata. As the Zapatistas passed by, a large part of the hacienda's hull burned down—as did the old train station—and the fields were left unavailable. Fortunately, a section that withstood the rigors of war better is the parish.
Currently, this church serves as rectory for the chapels of the region by decree of Bishop Francisco Javier Chaboya Ramos. Thanks to a great restoration effort, today the Hacienda San Martín hotel offers its guests a comfortable and pleasant stay, without losing the colonial charm that distinguishes it.
